(KPL) A grand ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) and Japan was held on January 22, 2025, in Tokyo, Japan. The event was attended by Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and his wife, along with ministers, deputy ministers, the presidents of the Lao-Japan and Japan-Laos Parliamentary Friendship Associations, and other distinguished guests from both nations.

Diplomatic ties between the Lao PDR and Japan were first established on March 5, 1955, marking a significant milestone in their shared history. Over the decades, the bilateral relationship has grown steadily, achieving notable milestones:

In 2010, the two nations elevated their relationship to a comprehensive partnership.

In 2015, on the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, their partnership was further upgraded to a strategic partnership.

In 2025, this partnership has reached a new height as the two countries become comprehensive strategic partners.

Speaking at the ceremony, Lao Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongsavanh Phomvihane highlighted the achievements of Lao-Japanese cooperation over the past seven decades. He noted that the two nations have fostered mutual understanding through regular high-level visits and collaborations. Japan has played a key role in supporting Lao PDR's development in areas such as human resources, public health, agriculture, forestry, infrastructure, and the clearance of unexploded ordnance (UXO)—a priority for Laos.

One of the most symbolic projects is Japan's contribution to the renovation of King Anouvong Stadium, commemorating the 70-year friendship. Additionally, Japan has provided significant Official Development Assistance (ODA) to Lao PDR, averaging USD 90-100 million annually.

Trade and investment ties have also flourished, particularly after the signing of the Investment Protection Treaty in 2008. The number of Japanese businesses operating in Laos has grown steadily, fostering deeper economic cooperation. Moreover, both nations have supported each other on regional and international platforms.

To celebrate this milestone, 2025 will see a series of vibrant cultural events in both countries, including special exhibitions showcasing Lao and Japanese culture, and other activities aimed at deepening bilateral ties.

This 70th anniversary also coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Japanese government sending volunteers to serve in Lao PDR, further underscoring the longstanding goodwill between the two nations.
