On Tuesday, Laos and Japan formalized a 1.27 billion yen (USD 8.1 million) grant for the improvement of Provincial Teacher Development Centres in nine Lao provinces. The agreement was signed by Japan’s Ambassador to Laos, Koizumi Tsutomu, and Laos’ Ambassador to Japan, Anlavan Phongsamouth, during Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone’s official visit to Japan, marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties and 60 years of Japan’s volunteer support to Laos.

A total of 69 natural disasters struck Laos in 2024, affecting all 16 provinces and Vientiane, with over 58,700 households (271,168 people) impacted. Among them, 17 people lost their lives, 58 were injured, and 6,432 houses sustained damage, including 110 that were completely destroyed.
Additionally, 126 schools and one airport were affected.
