(KPL) Laos has reported a notable decline in dengue fever cases during the first quarter of 2025, according to a recent report from the Ministry of Health. Between January and March 2025, the country recorded 556 cases of dengue, with no fatalities.

This represents a sharp decrease from the same period in 2024, when the number of cases reached 1,837, resulting in three deaths.

The Vientiane region recorded the highest number of dengue cases this year, with 152 reported cases, followed by Luang Namtha province with 91 and Luang Prabang with 66. The figures highlight a positive trend in the country's efforts to control the spread of the disease.

In response to the decline, the government has urged health officials and medical staff across the country to strengthen their efforts in managing dengue fever cases to prevent potential outbreaks. Authorities have emphasized the importance of continued vigilance as the rainy season approaches, as it typically leads to a rise in mosquito-borne diseases.

As part of its ongoing efforts to combat dengue and other mosquito-borne illnesses, the Ministry of Health launched a new initiative last month. The project involves the release of Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes, a method proven to reduce the spread of dengue. This program is expected to reach over 1.2 million people in the coming months, with the project expanding to key areas including Vientiane Capital, Luang Prabang, Oudomxay, Savannakhet, and Champasak provinces.

Authorities are optimistic that this approach will further reduce dengue incidence across the country and protect the population from the ongoing threat of mosquito-borne diseases.
