(KPL) The Government’s regular meeting for August 2025 opened on the morning of August 25 at the Prime Minister’s Office under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone. The meeting was attended in person by Deputy Prime Ministers, cabinet members, and representatives of ministries and agencies, while provincial and Vientiane Capital leaders joined via teleconference to listen and provide input on the August situation report and the focused work plan for September 2025.

The two-day meeting will include research, consultations, discussions, and deliberations on a range of important topics. These include: a review of the Government’s performance in August and priorities for September; an assessment of international and regional developments and foreign affairs work plans; preparations for the opening of the 2025–2026 academic year, including the annual meeting of education administrators, changes to university administrator titles, the new Ministry of Education and Sports logo, and solutions to issues regarding volunteer teacher quotas for national defense enrollment.

Other agenda items include the draft master plan for the development of Nakasang, Dondeth, Donkhon, and surrounding areas for 2025–2035; draft decrees on anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction; draft decrees on freezing, seizure, and confiscation of terrorist-related funds; draft decrees on the tourism fund, health impact assessments, and regulations related to railway management.

In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Sonexay highlighted that the regional and global situation remains tense and uncertain, particularly due to ongoing political and military conflicts in some areas and neighboring countries. These challenges continue to disrupt people’s lives, economies, and global markets, causing commodity and fuel prices to rise further. Laos, he stressed, cannot avoid direct and indirect impacts.

Domestically, the Prime Minister noted that heavy rainfall in many provinces has triggered flooding, flash floods, and landslides, leading to considerable damage. He urged participants to study and propose timely and effective measures to prevent and address such impacts in order to safeguard people’s livelihoods, protect public property, and ensure the country’s socio-economic development.

He also called on government members to provide in-depth, practical, and concise input on each agenda item so that the meeting could achieve its objectives and expectations.
