(KPL) Last year the percentage of Laos'electricity production exported to neighbouring countries increased 6.62%, and compared to the previous year, imports decreased by 12.37%.
At the same time, the amount of electricity distributed within the nation increased by almost 50%, according to the Ministry of Energy and Mines.
In the period of 2013-14, the Energy and Mines Sector had a total production amount of over 21 trillion kip (US$2.6 billion), of which 5.9 trillion kip (US$733 million) came from electricity and 15.3 trillion kip (US$1.9 billion) came from mining.
The electricity generation was expected to reach 15.1 billion kilowatt hours or an 8. 03% increase compared to the annual plan, but surpassed 4.5% as the distribution of electricity amounted to over 15 billion kilowatt hours.
Out of a total amount of electricity, of which 11.3 billion kilowatt-hours was exported earning US$535.4 million and represented an increase of 6.62% when compared to the previous year.
Domestic electricity distribution amounted to 4.5 billion kilowatt hours and earned about US$345.4 million for an increase of 49.08%.
The network of transmission lines has not yet been fully connected nationwide; therefore some parts of country still need to import electricity from Thailand, Vietnam, or China.
Last year's electricity imports totalled 1.1 billion kilowatt hours and cost the country over US$63 million. However imports are expected to decrease.
