(KPL) The Japanese Government has provided grant assistance worth US$232,237 for four water supply projects through its Grant-in-Aid Scheme for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
On 27 November 2014, four grant contracts were signed at the Ministry of Health in Vientiane, between the Ambassador of Japan to the Lao PDR Hiroyuki KISHINO, Director of the Health Office of Xiengkhouang Province, Dr. Nantee Suphanthong, and Director of the 67km School for Orphans and Ethnic minorities Chanda Keophakdy, while Minister of Health Eksavang Vongvichith, and other officials witnessed.
The first project is for water supply at the 67km School for Orphans and Ethnic Minorities, Vientiane Province. There is access to water, but there is not enough safe potable water for all the residents there. In addition, the current water supply system from a river is outdated and is not sustainable.Through this project, a new water supply system will be installed. As a result, more than 1,000 residents, including 770 students who live there, will benefit.
The remaining three projects will install a water supply system in three villages of Xieng Khuang Province including Phuhoum, Nasara, and Phukeng. There are no wells available in Nasara, and only a few wells are usable in the other two villages.Access to safe potable water is a serious issue, particularly during the dry season. More than 1,400 residents will benefit as a result of these projects.
In his remarks, Ambassador Kishino emphasized, "These projects will contribute significantly to the empowerment of vulnerable and marginalized people in need and to the economic and social development of the respective communities."
He continued, "It is also critically important that the benefits of the projects be enjoyed by people in the respective localcommunities as this is the most significant characteristic of GGPs."
Japan has supported the Lao Government's efforts to improve health, medical services, and water supplies for many years. Through this GGP scheme, Japan has implemented 461 projects since 1989, including 17 health centre projects and 34 water supply projects.
