(KPL) A ceremony to mark the end of the Maternal Healthcare Project was held last Friday at Xaythany District Hospital, Vientiane Capital.
The project was funded with US$23,000 which was raised by the 4th Laos-Singapore Charity Run 2012 hosted by the Singapore Embassy in Laos.
The project was a short-term initiative (1-year) that commenced in August 2013 and provided free antenatal and maternal care to pregnant women. Around 100 women benefited directly from the project as they were given free medical care when they gave birth to children at the district hospital and other central hospitals.
Another 16 women are expected to give birth to children and will be given free medical care under the project through the end of this year.
The project aimed to help poor pregnant women who live in rural and remote areas where hospitals are difficult to access, and first time mothers in order to reduce the mortality rate of mothers and children.
Under the project, counseling and information on health, nutrition, family planning, and breastfeeding were also provided to target groups.
Present at the closing ceremony were Deputy Chief of Xaythany District, Mr Bounvan Chasuakao, Charge’ d’affaires of Singapore Embassy to Laos, Mr Scott Loh, and relevant officials of both sides.
