(KPL) A total of 69 natural disasters struck Laos in 2024, affecting all 16 provinces and Vientiane, with over 58,700 households (271,168 people) impacted. Among them, 17 people lost their lives, 58 were injured, and 6,432 houses sustained damage, including 110 that were completely destroyed.
Additionally, 126 schools and one airport were affected.
The disasters also damaged more than 41,000 hectares of agricultural land and 118 irrigation facilities, with total losses estimated at over 6.747 trillion kip.
Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee, Gen. Chansamone Chanyalath, reported these figures at the committee's 2024 annual meeting on January 21, 2025.
He highlighted that various disasters—including storms, landslides, flash floods, and prolonged flooding—had affected multiple provinces, with Attapeu being the only province spared.
A nationwide assessment revealed a growing severity of disasters, with unprecedented flooding in northern provinces such as Huaphan, Luang Namtha, Xayaboury, and Luang Prabang, causing extensive damage.
In response, the government, through the Central Disaster Management Committee, has approved recovery initiatives across social welfare, agriculture, infrastructure, and education. These include 50 projects worth over 144 billion kip for Luang Namtha, 42 projects worth 33.9 billion kip for Huaphan, 28 projects worth 17.4 billion kip for Xayaboury, 27 projects worth 5.3 billion kip for Xieng Khuang, and 11 projects worth 27.9 billion kip for Luang Prabang.
