(KPL)Laos recorded a decline in traffic-related deaths during the Lao New Year 2025 celebrations, with 26 fatalities reported between April 11 and 17 — down from 33 during the same period in 2024.
Deputy Head of the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security, Colonel Keomala Sengthong, revealed at a press conference on Friday that a total of 313 accidents occurred nationwide this year, slightly down from 316 last year.
In addition to the fatalities, 521 people were injured and 538 vehicles were damaged in this year’s road accidents. The highest number of accidents was reported in Champasak province with 40 cases, followed by Vientiane province with 38, and the capital, Vientiane, with 35.
Colonel Keomala said the main contributing factors to the accidents were drunk driving and speeding, which continue to pose serious challenges during major festivals.

In comparison, the Lao New Year 2024 period saw 594 injuries and 567 damaged vehicles. Despite the slight drop in total accidents, authorities emphasize the need for ongoing public awareness and stricter enforcement to improve road safety during national celebrations.
