(KPL) Hundreds of Vientiane residents and civil servants gathered today at the Victory Gate Monument to participate in the Walk for Health, marking the 115th anniversary of International Women’s Day under the theme "Rights, Equality, and Strength for All Women and Girls."

The event saw the presence of high-ranking officials, including Deputy Prime Ministers Kikeo Khaykhamphithoun and Chansamone Chanyalath, Vice President of the National Assembly Ms. Sounthone Sayachack, President of the Lao Women’s Union Ms. Aly Vongnorbountham, Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Ms. Suansavanh Viyaket, and President of the Lao Front for National Construction Mr. Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune.

This year’s celebration comes amid national preparations for several significant historical milestones, including the 70th anniversary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, the 50th anniversary of the Lao PDR, and the 105th birth anniversary of President Kaysone Phomvihane. Additionally, the country is preparing for the 9th National Congress of Lao Women's Representatives in mid-2025 and the 70th anniversary of the Lao Women’s Union.

International Women’s Day, observed globally on March 8, is a momentous occasion recognizing women's contributions across various fields, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, culture, or political background. The celebration traces its roots to labor movements in North America and Europe in the early 20th century.

The Walk for Health event highlighted the Lao Women’s Union’s efforts in advancing gender equality, promoting women’s rights, and ensuring the well-being of women and children. The Lao government continues to prioritize policies that support women's development, protect their rights, and enhance their participation in leadership and decision-making roles. These efforts align with international commitments, including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), contributing to the nation's ongoing socio-economic progress.
