(KPL/Prensa Latina) The Chinese province of Guangdong reported a local outbreak of chikungunya fever with 1,387 new autochthonous cases registered last week, none of them serious.

Patients are mainly distributed in southern cities: Foshan concentrates the largest number with 1,212 cases, while Guangzhou follows with 103.

Dr. Kang Min, director of the Institute of Disease Prevention and Control of the Guangdong Center for Disease Control, pointed out that eliminating stagnant water is the most effective measure to interrupt the transmission chain.

He pointed out that the rapid growth of cases in Foshan has been contained initially and there is a decreasing trend in the number of new patients at the provincial level, however, the situation is complex.

Local authorities stressed the importance of a collective response and urged the public to actively participate in the hygiene campaign promoted by the provincial government.

In this regard, Guangdong called on people to use mosquito nets, put screens on windows, use repellents, eliminate stagnant water and dispose of waste.
