(KPL) The 22nd Kapok Flower Festival (Boun Dok Ngiew Ban) officially opened on February 1, 2025, at the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone in Ton Pheung District, Bokeo Province.

The opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Vilay Lakhamfong, who also serves as Minister of Public Security, along with Bokeo Governor Thongchanh Manixay, former provincial leaders, and both local and international guests.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Kaolong, Vice President of the Council Administration of the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone, highlighted that this year’s festival coincides with the 18th anniversary of the Special Economic Zone’s establishment. He noted significant achievements, including the development of an airport, five-star hotels, and a national border immigration office, all made possible through the support of the Lao government and strong Laos-China relations.

Looking ahead, Mr. Kaolong emphasized ongoing efforts to enhance agriculture, tourism, transportation, trade, and light industry. He expressed confidence that continued infrastructure improvements and livelihood enhancements will create a lasting impression on international visitors.

Governor Thongchanh Manixay stated that the Kapok Flower Festival aims to preserve and promote Bokeo Province’s rich cultural heritage, showcasing the arts, traditions, and customs of its diverse ethnic communities. The event also seeks to connect local heritage with international cultures, allowing visitors to experience the breathtaking beauty of the kapok tree (Dok Ngiew) and its vibrant red blossoms at their peak.

This year’s festival features a diverse range of cultural and recreational activities, including performances and exhibitions from Laos, China, Thailand, and Myanmar. Highlights include the 2nd Golden Triangle Peace International Art Exhibition, a golf tournament, the Miss Dok Ngiew Contest, a Lao-Chinese art and literature show and a lantern release ceremony for blessings.

In Lao culture, the kapok flower symbolizes wealth, courage, and elegance. The festival serves as a platform to promote sustainable tourism, cultural heritage, and economic growth, while showcasing Bokeo’s natural beauty, historical significance, and unique traditions.

Over the years, the Kapok Flower Festival has become one of Bokeo Province’s most anticipated events, attracting both domestic and international tourists. The festival not only boosts the local economy but also supports small businesses, trade, and services.

Held annually in Don Shao Village, a 40-hectare area of dense kapok forests within the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone, the festival transforms the landscape into a stunning sea of red blossoms during winter, drawing thousands of visitors.

Since its inception in 2000, the festival has been celebrated 21 times and remains a cherished tradition. Taking place from late January to early February, it continues to reflect the pride of Bokeo’s people, who warmly welcome guests from around the world to enjoy this unique cultural experience.

Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the lively atmosphere, witness the stunning natural beauty, and participate in exciting cultural activities during this extraordinary celebration.
