(KPL) The third ASEAN Youth Dialogue (AYD) is taking place in Luang Prabang from October 6-8, 2024, under the theme "Enhancing Comprehensive and Resilient Supports for Sustainable ASEAN Youth Development." Organized by the Lao Youth Union in partnership with UNFPA and UNICEF, the event has gathered 33 senior officials and youth representatives from ASEAN member countries and Timor-Leste to address key regional challenges and discuss future strategies for ASEAN youth.

With the ASEAN youth population expected to exceed 220 million by 2038, young people play a pivotal role in driving innovation and change across the region. The ongoing dialogue covers issues such as health, well-being, education, entrepreneurship, and social inclusion, with youth delegates working together to develop solutions and recommendations for advancing youth development in ASEAN.

Mr. Monexay Laomuaxong, Secretary General of the Lao Youth Union, emphasized the importance of investing in youth to ensure a prosperous future for the region. “Their health, education, employment, and empowerment are essential for economic and social stability, as well as sustainable development. This dialogue provides a platform for youth to express their aspirations and concerns,” he said.

The involvement of ASEAN youth is also critical for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and accelerating digital transformation. The outcomes of the dialogue will be presented to ASEAN leaders during the upcoming ASEAN Summit, hosted by the Lao PDR in 2024.

UN Resident Coordinator in the Lao PDR, Mr. Bakhodir Burkhanov, highlighted the potential of youth as leaders and innovators. "You have the potential to transform your communities and influence the region as a whole," he told youth delegates.

Over the three days, participants are engaging in discussions focused on digital skills, sexual and reproductive health, and economic empowerment. Mr. Pio Smith, UNFPA Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, stressed that “Youth are the agents of change today” and their voices will drive meaningful progress toward a sustainable future.

The dialogue will culminate in the finalization of the ASEAN Youth Statement, outlining recommendations to strengthen regional cooperation for sustainable development. Ms. June Kunugi, Regional Director for UNICEF East Asia & Pacific, underscored the importance of investing in youth, particularly girls, to ensure equal opportunities in education and leadership.

The event will be followed by the ASEAN Leaders' Interface with Representatives of ASEAN Youth, set to take place in Vientiane Capital on October 9-10, where delegates will present their recommendations directly to ASEAN leaders.
