(KPL) The ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) has released a study titled "Energy Sector Development Plan for Net-Zero Emissions in Laos". The study, published on March 25, 2025, underscores Laos' commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, aligning with its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) under the Paris Agreement.

The energy sector plays a crucial role in Laos' climate strategy, as the study explores pathways to reduce emissions through renewable energy and low-carbon technologies. This national-level study marks the first such initiative by ACE, demonstrating Laos’ proactive engagement in regional energy transition efforts.

As part of its ASEAN chairmanship in 2024, Laos is leading regional discussions on sustainable energy. The study was launched alongside the eighth edition of the ASEAN Energy Outlook (AEO8), a key publication that provides insights into ASEAN's energy landscape.

Mrs. Santisouk Phimphachan, Senior Officer for Energy in Laos, emphasized that this initiative reflects the country’s strong commitment to sustainability and carbon reduction. She highlighted the importance of regional collaboration in achieving shared climate and energy goals.

Dr. Zulfikar Yurnaidi, Manager of Energy Modelling and Policy Planning at ACE, noted that the study serves as a model for ASEAN-wide energy planning. Laos is the first ASEAN country to partner with ACE on a national-level study focusing on net-zero emissions, reinforcing ACE’s mission to support member states in their energy transitions.

The findings from the study will be shared across ASEAN nations to foster knowledge exchange and capacity building. By spearheading this initiative, Laos aims to position itself as a leader in the regional shift towards sustainable energy and climate resilience.
