(KPL) Lao cinema is poised to make history as ນາງນອນ (Nang Norn or The Sleeping Beauty) becomes the first-ever Lao film selected for competition at the prestigious Locarno Film Festival. Directed by Mattie Do and produced by Lao Art Media, the short film features performances by Lao actors Sonedara Sihavong, Phonesavanh Tata Phimpa, and Gabriel Soutphilabaideng, all hailing from Vientiane.

The film will have its world premiere on August 8, 2025, as part of the Pardi di Domani – Corti d’Autore section—an esteemed program that highlights bold and visionary short films by established directors from around the world.

Now in its 78th edition, the Locarno Film Festival—taking place from August 6 to 16 in Locarno, Switzerland—stands as a vital platform in international cinema. Since its founding in 1946, the festival has earned a reputation as a launchpad for emerging talent and a celebration of cinematic innovation. Supported by the Swiss Confederation and the Federal Office of Culture, Locarno is globally recognized for championing artistic risk-taking and new storytelling voices.

The selection of Nang Norn marks a significant milestone not only for its creative team but also for the Lao film industry at large, which has been gaining international attention and acclaim in recent years. Its inclusion in Pardi di Domani signals growing recognition of Southeast Asian cinema and affirms the global relevance of Lao storytelling.

For festivalgoers and global audiences alike, Nang Norn offers a rare and compelling glimpse into Lao culture through a bold, cinematic lens. The film will screen on August 8 at 2:30 PM at the Locarno International Film Festival.
