(KPL) Laos and China have taken a major step in strengthening their cooperation in vocational education with the signing of a field survey report to launch a new vocational college project in the Saysettha Development Zone, Vientiane.

The agreement, signed on July 29 at the ICT Center in Vientiane, aims to establish a modern vocational college that addresses labor market needs in the rapidly growing development zone. It represents a key milestone in advancing technical and vocational training aligned with national economic goals.

The document was signed by Mr. Vilayphone Phommahaxay, Acting Director General of the Department of Technical and Vocational Education and Training under the Lao Ministry of Education and Sports, and Mr. Li Gibo, Head of the Expert Team from the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design, representing the Economic and Commercial Office of the Chinese Embassy in Laos.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Deputy Minister of Education and Sports, Ms. Dalavone Kittiphan, and Mr. Khampheng Latmany, Deputy Director of the Lao-China Cooperation Committee under the Ministry of Finance.

Mr. Li Gibo described the project as a “strong starting point” for deepening educational cooperation and emphasized that both sides are committed to securing swift governmental approval and ensuring effective implementation.

Deputy Minister Dalavone highlighted the initiative as part of the broader Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which Laos joined in 2015. She noted that the vocational college builds on the momentum of previous major BRI-backed projects, such as the Lao-China Railway and the Railway Vocational College, both launched during President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Laos in 2017.

“This project is a crucial step toward developing a high-quality workforce tailored to the economic needs of the zone and the country,” she said.

Once completed, the college is expected to enhance technical and vocational education in key sectors, supporting Laos' long-term goals of sustainable development and regional integration
