ຂປລ The Lao People’s Democratic Republic officially launched the commemorative logo celebrating the 70th anniversary of its membership in the United Nations during a ceremony held in Vientiane on Monday. The event was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Thongsavanh Phomvihane, UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Bakhodir Burkhanov, ambassadors, heads of missions, and representatives of international organizations, including the UN Country Team.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Thongsavanh highlighted the historic and symbolic significance of 2025, noting that while the United Nations marks its 80th anniversary, Laos also celebrates seven decades of active engagement with the world body. He described the Lao-UN partnership as “a shared journey of hope, solidarity, and progress,” which has helped guide the country toward graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status, expected in 2026.

“For much of this journey, both Laos and the United Nations have evolved—through post-colonial struggles, wars, and development challenges,” said Mr. Thongsavanh. He praised Laos’ foreign policy, which has consistently championed peace, solidarity, and international cooperation. Over the past three decades, the country has reduced poverty, improved child and maternal health, and enhanced nutrition rates.

He also noted the United Nations’ parallel evolution—from its founding mission to prevent conflict, to its present-day role in addressing complex global challenges such as inequality, climate change, and digital transformation. “The UN Charter remains as relevant as ever, but the organization must continue to evolve to meet today’s challenges,” he added.

The commemorative logo, titled “LaoUN70” , was designed by Lao youth. The design features a flowing number ‘7’ symbolizing unity, a dove representing peace, and Champa flower petals that link national heritage to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The image underscores not just past achievements, but aspirations for the future, particularly those led by youth.

Young people, Mr. Thongsavanh emphasized, will be at the heart of the anniversary celebrations. Initiatives such as “Project Sinxay” and “Youth Innovation” for SDGs  will encourage youth-led solutions in areas like climate-smart agriculture, mental health, and environmental protection. Youth will also participate in major national and international forums, including the Youth Innovation and Storytelling Fair, the National Youth Forum, and COP30 preparation events.

In his remarks, UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Bakhodir Burkhanov praised Laos for its active and constructive role within the UN system. “Over the past decades, the Lao PDR has contributed to global peace, human rights, development cooperation, and environmental protection,” he said.

Laos has held several key positions within the UN, including Vice-President of the UN General Assembly, membership in ECOSOC, and representation on various UN executive boards. It has also championed the Convention on Cluster Munitions and will preside over its Third Review Conference in Geneva this week.

Mr. Burkhanov also emphasized the broader partnership between Laos and the UN, which has delivered tangible progress in development, heritage conservation, and the pursuit of the SDGs—including Laos’ unique national goal, SDG18: “Lives Safe from UXO”.

As Laos prepares for LDC graduation, both speakers underscored that the journey is far from over. A Smooth Transition Strategy and Readiness Assessment are already in motion, ensuring continued cooperation for sustainable development beyond 2026.
