At the 6th Congress of the Party Committee of the Ministry of National Defense, Secretary General of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee, President of the State, and Chairman of the Central Committee for National Defense and Security Thongloun Sisoulith, underscored the need to further develop the Lao People’s Army into a strong, and steadfast force under the Party’s absolute leadership.
(KPL) At the 6th Congress of the Party Committee of the Ministry of National Defense, Secretary General of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee, President of the State, and Chairman of the Central Committee for National Defense and Security Thongloun Sisoulith, underscored the need to further develop the Lao People’s Army into a strong, and steadfast force under the Party’s absolute leadership.He recalled that since its founding, the army has remained loyal to the Party, devoted to the people and nation, and ready to sacrifice for national independence and the protection of the new system. President Kaysone Phomvihane once praised it as “the heroic army of the heroic Lao nation.”President Thongloun urged strengthening the Party Committee of the Ministry of National Defense in political, ideological, and organizational terms, enhancing leadership capacity, and improving combat readiness at all levels. He also called for modernization of the armed forces, improvement of specialized skills, political-ideological education, command capabilities, and the development of young strategic and tactical officers.He stressed continuing the strategy of rooting military forces in local communities, particularly in remote, border, and strategic areas, while fostering close ties between soldiers and civilians. Assisting the people in development, he said, is a long-standing tradition that must be preserved and enriched under new conditions.President Thongloun highlighted the need for the military to excel in combat, mobilization, political foundation-building, and production, with clear objectives and responsibilities. He emphasized promoting self-reliance through production, infrastructure development, and livelihood improvement, making the military a pillar of the national economy. On foreign policy, he called for strengthening defense and security cooperation, especially with strategic partners Vietnam, China, and Russia, and expanding military diplomacy to promote peace and cooperation worldwide.The President also noted the importance of developing capabilities to participate in United Nations peacekeeping operations, reinforcing Laos’ role in maintaining global peace and security.
