ຂປລ The Lao PDR is preparing to launch digital ID cards nationwide in early October 2025. The new cards are designed to be compact, lightweight, and colorful, with a modern appearance that meets international standards including ISO 7810, ISO 7816, ISO 14443, and ICAO 9303.

(KPL) The Lao PDR is preparing to launch digital ID cards nationwide in early October 2025. The new cards are designed to be compact, lightweight, and colorful, with a modern appearance that meets international standards including ISO 7810, ISO 7816, ISO 14443, and ICAO 9303.

Digital ID cards feature advanced security measures such as embedded personal history chips, biometric data including fingerprints and facial recognition, as well as blind spots, QR codes, and barcodes.

The validity period of the new ID cards will depend on the age of the holder. For children, cards can be issued from birth to six years of age, and again from six to fifteen years. From age 15 to 20, citizens will receive their first adult ID card, followed by a renewal valid for 20 years. After that, the cards will be valid for 10 years each. For citizens aged 60 and above, digital ID cards will be issued without an expiration date.

Lao citizens may apply for their digital ID cards at designated locations:

At the central level: Department of Population Management and Infrastructure Construction.

At the provincial level: Provincial Security Command.

In Vientiane Capital: Vientiane Capital Security Command.

At district or city level: District or City Security Commands.

Applicants can choose any of these locations or pre-register via the LaelD application before collecting their card. For urgent cases, citizens may directly visit the Department of Population Management and Infrastructure Construction, Ministry of Public Security.

Required documents include a birth certificate, an old ID card (green card), or a copy of a passport. The processing fee for each digital ID card is 30,000 kip.
